How often is the smoke extraction system checked?
In establishments open to the public (ERP), smoke extraction systems must be checked annually as follows:
- Natural and mechanical smoke ventilation (excluding category A or B S.S.I.) - Annual check by a competent technician,
- Mechanical smoke ventilation installed in a category A or B I.S.S. - Annual check by a competent technician and once every three years by an approved organization.
Smoke extraction systems must also be regularly checked by visual inspection.
The main checks will cover :
- operation of control devices, vents, openings, distribution networks
- equipment condition
- duct sealing
- the match between smoke extraction systems and the characteristics of the premises.
What regulations apply to the maintenance of smoke extraction systems?
As an APSAD I17/F17-certified company, we comply with APSAD rule R17 for our maintenance operations.
This APSAD R17 standard defines the requirements for the design, installation and maintenance of natural smoke and heat exhaust systems: smoke and heat vents and façade vents.
The standard applies to single- or multi-storey buildings of all types: public buildings, residential buildings, workplaces, industrial or commercial buildings, etc.
French safety standard NF S 61-933 (Système de Sécurité Incendie - Règles d'exploitation et de maintenance) specifies that fire safety system testing operations must be carried out periodically (annually: testing of vents, opening devices, testing of control devices).
