What are the two types of emergency lighting?
Regulations require emergency lighting in buildings, premises and establishments open to the public (ERP) and/or workers (ERT), as well as in certain apartment buildings.
The purpose of evacuation lighting is to indicate escape routes and emergency exits by means of illuminated markers.
Ambient or anti-panic lighting helps maintain sufficient brightness in high-risk areas and common spaces to prevent panic.

What is a BAES SATI?
According to current regulations, LED emergency lighting units must be equipped with an S.A.T.I. system (Système Automatiques de Tests Intégré - Integrated Automatic Test System) in compliance with standard NFC 71-820, which automatically and periodically performs the mandatory tests and indicates faults (low battery, defective bulb....) by means of an indicator light:
- Green: BAES operational
- Steady orange: lamp to be replaced
- Flashing orange: battery to be replaced
This system eliminates the need for time-consuming and costly inspections to identify faulty blocks.
BAES or LSC?
A BAES is a self-contained emergency lighting unit powered by built-in batteries. An LSC is a Luminaire on Centralized Source powered by a permanent remote source and made up of a battery of accumulators.
BAES are generally used in all types of establishment, with no special regulatory requirements.
Certain types of establishment require the use of LSCs connected to a centralized source, if the permissible number of people exceeds 700. LSCs are therefore used in auditoriums, shopping centers, trade fairs, dance halls, etc.
BAES or BAEH?
The BAES (Bloc Autonome d'Eclairage et de Sécurité) can be used in any type of building.
The BAEH (Bloc Autonome d'Eclairage pour Habitation) is also an emergency lighting system for condominiums and sleeping quarters, complementing the BAES beaconing system.
The difference lies in their power and autonomy: a BAES for evacuation must produce a luminous flux of 45 lumens for 1 hour, compared with a BAEH which is content to deliver a luminous flux of 8 lumens, but for 5 hours.
Self-contained portable emergency units (BAPIs) must also be installed in equipment rooms.
The regulations stipulate that: "The BAES installation must have one or more devices enabling centralized switching to the off state, located close to the general control unit or divisional control units for normal lighting in the building, or part of the building concerned".
This device, better known as a BAES remote control, enables the BAES of an installation to be put into a resting state. It enables the units to be switched off after a voluntary cut-off of normal lighting (end of building operation). Remote controls automatically return the lighting units to standby mode when normal lighting is restored.
French law no. 2005-102 of February 11, 2005 on equal rights and opportunities, participation and citizenship for the disabled requires that people with reduced mobility be able to access secure waiting areas (EAS) while awaiting assistance. This applies mainly to levels that are not ground-level.
A reinforced beaconing system (DBR) must be installed for easy access to these areas and to identify ground-floor emergency exits.
