FAQ
How to position the extinguisher (Height)
The extinguisher must be installed at an easily accessible height, 1.20 meters above the floor. This height enables it to be quickly grabbed in an emergency, without requiring excessive effort.
Make sure the extinguisher is securely fixed to the wall to avoid any risk of falling. It's also crucial to position it in a clearly visible, unobstructed area, close to risk zones. This makes it easier to locate and use immediately in the event of a fire.
Finally, it is advisable to check local regulations and the recommendations of the relevant authorities to ensure that the installation complies with current standards.
Is a fire extinguisher mandatory in the home?
The installation of a fire extinguisher in a single-family home is not generally required by law, except in certain specific situations. However, although it is not compulsory, it is strongly recommended that you have one on hand to deal with any fire outbreaks and effectively protect occupants and property.
In certain circumstances, such as in multi-family dwellings (apartments) or houses with specific hazards (presence of cooking appliances, wood-burning heating, etc.), the rules may vary. We recommend that you check local regulations and consult the recommendations of the relevant fire safety authorities to determine whether the installation of a fire extinguisher is necessary in your specific case.
Even if it's not compulsory, having a fire extinguisher in your home can bring extra peace of mind and enable you to react quickly in the event of a fire, which can make all the difference in terms of safety and asset protection. Make sure your family knows where it is and how to use it properly in an emergency.
What are the rules for installing fire extinguishers?
To comply with current standards, a minimum of one 6-liter portable water-spray extinguisher must be installed for every 200 m² of floor space, with a minimum of one per level. This rule, which stems from the French Labor Code, provides basic coverage against fire hazards.
In addition, plants must assess the risks specific to their activities. For example, premises housing electrical switchboards must be equipped with CO2 extinguishers. Similarly, industrial zones, where the risk is higher, often require an extinguisher for every 150 m².
Fire extinguishers need to be strategically placed to ensure rapid intervention in the event of a fire. In particular, they should be placed close to emergency exits and high-risk areas. For optimum distribution, we recommend calling in the professionals for a detailed audit.
Who can install fire extinguishers?
Fire Safety Technicians: Professionals trained and qualified to install and maintain fire safety equipment, including extinguishers.
Fire safety companies: Specialized fire safety companies often employ qualified technicians to install fire extinguishers and other fire safety equipment.
Certified electricians: In some cases, certified electricians may be qualified to install fire extinguishers, particularly if they have received additional training in fire safety.
General contractors: As part of the construction or renovation of a building, general contractors may also be asked to install fire extinguishers in accordance with project plans and specifications.
How many extinguishers per m2?
The French Labor Code (article R4227-29) and ERP regulations stipulate that fire-fighting first aid must be provided by a sufficient number of fire extinguishers maintained in good working order.
There is at least one portable water-spray extinguisher with a minimum capacity of 6 liters for every 200 square meters of floor space.
There is at least one unit per level.
When premises present particular fire risks, notably electrical risks, they are equipped with extinguishers of a number and type appropriate to the risks.
