Standards, types and installation
Fire extinguisher signs are essential for fire safety. They indicate the location and type of extinguisher, facilitating rapid intervention in the event of fire. These signs, available in a range of formats and materials, must be prominently displayed above fire extinguishers. Their use is regulated and compulsory in establishments open to the public and in the workplace.

Regulations and standards for fire extinguisher panels
Standard NF X08-003 governs the design of fire extinguisher signs in France. It defines the colors, shapes and pictograms to be used. Signs must be square or rectangular in shape, with a red background and white symbols.
Regulations impose minimum dimensions to ensure visibility: 200 x 200 mm for square signs and 200 x 400 mm for rectangular signs.
The French Labour Code requires these signs to be placed between 1.20 m and 2 m above the ground. They must clearly indicate the type of extinguishing agent (water, CO2, powder) and the appropriate fire class (A, B, C).
For establishments handling natural gas, specific signs are required, warning against the use of water on gas fires.
Our services
Panel types: ABC, CO2, water and powder
Fire extinguisher signs come in several categories, depending on the extinguishing agent they indicate. ABC signs indicate multi-purpose powder extinguishers, effective against most common fires.
For electrical hazards, CO2 signs indicate fire extinguishers adapted to live equipment.
Water" signs refer to water spray extinguishers, ideal for fires involving solid materials.
Each panel bears specific pictograms:
- Barred flame for overall efficiency
- Letters A, B, C for the relevant fire classes
- Additional symbols such as a crossed-out lightning bolt for electrically powered lights
These visuals help you quickly identify the right extinguisher in an emergency.
Signs and pictograms: how to read them?
Fire extinguisher signs use a standardized visual language to quickly communicate crucial information. The red background always indicates fire-fighting equipment. The white symbols represent the extinguishing agent: a cube for powder, drops for water, and a cloud for CO2.
The letters A, B, C indicate the appropriate fire classes:
- A: solid material fires
- B: liquefiable liquid or solid fires
- C: gas fires
A crossed-out lightning bolt means "do not use on electric fires". A crossed-out flame on a pictogram indicates a specific prohibition, such as "do not use on gas fires". Mastering this signage allows you to act effectively in emergency situations.
Where to place fire extinguisher panels in an ERP building?
In an establishment open to the public, the strategic positioning of fire extinguisher signs is crucial. Place them near emergency exits and stairwells for quick location. Make sure they are visible from main traffic areas.
For large spaces, install a sign every 15 to 20 meters. In corridors, install them at intersections and changes of direction.
Take into account the specific features of your ERP :
- Restaurants: close to the kitchen
- Hotels: on every floor, close to the elevators
- Concert halls: near emergency exits
Make sure the signs are not obscured by furniture or decorations. Adequate lighting will ensure their visibility in all circumstances.
Installation: sign height and visibility
The optimum location of fire extinguisher signs plays a crucial role in fire safety. The ideal height is between 1.60 m and 2 m from the ground, making them easy to read for most people. This position also facilitates rapid access to the extinguisher in the event of an emergency.
To maximize visibility :
- Choose well-lit areas
- Avoid visual obstacles such as plants or furniture
- Choose photoluminescent panels for dark spaces
A strong contrast between the sign and its surroundings improves detection from a distance. The use of reflective materials enhances visibility, particularly useful in parking lots or warehouses. Regular maintenance, including cleaning and checking the condition of signs, ensures their long-term effectiveness.
