Powder extinguishers

Our powder extinguishers offer a versatile and effective solution for fire-fighting.
Safety, maneuverability Performance, durability

Since 1981, the Eurofeu Group has been designing and manufacturing a wide range of "Origine France Garantie" permanent and auxiliary pressure extinguishers to meet all potential risks, whatever your company's sector of activity. Make the difference by choosing Eurofeu!

What is a dry chemical extinguisher? (ABC, BC, D)

These extinguishers use powder as the extinguishing agent, and act by smothering Class A fires through the formation of a liquid varnish that isolates hot surfaces from oxygen and flammable gases, preventing the fire from reigniting. They have an inhibiting action on Class B and C fires, i.e. they interrupt the chain reaction of combustion.

The appliances capable of dealing with these three types of fire are known as ABC multi-purpose powder extinguishers. They use a powder (often blue in color) generally composed of ammonium phosphates, whose decomposition into ammonia smothers embers by forming a vitreous impermeable layer, which explains their effectiveness on fire class A.

BC powder extinguishers use a different type of powder (often white), based on sodium or potassium bicarbonate, depending on the application, and are effective on fire classes B and C.

With an operating temperature range of -30°C to 60°C, powder extinguishers are ideal for outdoor use.

How a dry powder extinguisher works

A powder extinguisher consists of the following components:

Mounted head, hose and propellant

A cylindrical body

A mounted head that closes the unit

  • The handle to hold the device and activate the firing pin (on auxiliary pressure) and to activate the extinguisher (on permanent pressure),
  • A firing pin on an auxiliary pressure,
  • A dip tube,
  • A detacher tube to avoid the risk of powder settling at the bottom of the tank,
  • Control and safety devices (seals, pin, percussion indicator, pressure gauge for permanent pressure, etc.),

A hose and propellant

  • A hose equipped with a diffuser and a lance for guiding and emptying the device,
  • The propellant gas cartridge (often carbon dioxide or nitrogen) for auxiliary pressure.

A cylindrical body

  • Metal and filled with ABC, BC or D powder.

The device operatesmechanically: percussion of the gas cartridge pushes the powder into the dip tube, breaking up the powder at the bottom of the tank if necessary. Activating the extinguishing handle sprays this powder under pressure through the lance and nozzle onto the fire to be extinguished.

The fire attack distance varies between 4 and 3 meters for an ABC or BC powder extinguisher. The D powder extinguisher is fitted with a pole that allows it to be diffused at the base of the flame.

Our Eurocycle ABC 40 recycled powder

A unique product on the market

Committed to a circular economy approach, Eurofeu is proud to be the first fire safety company to equip its fire extinguishers with recycled ABC 40 powder! Our goal: 50% recycled Eurocycle ABC 40 powder in our production within 5 years!

An impactful project for the future

Eurofeu is the first player in the fire protection industry to commit to a circular project of this scale. End customers, agencies, distributors, production sites, denaturation partners: the entire industry will be involved in the near future.

The environmental impact is already significant, with a 90% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions associated with the manufacture of new powder. This represents a reduction of 1,000 tons of CO2 per year.

How to recognize a dry powder extinguisher?

Powder extinguishers can be identified in Europe by their yellow-coloured components:

Yellow handle and diffuser

Yellow base and blowgun cover

  • When disassembling the head, a detacher tube and a more powerful CO2 cartridge (120g vs. 40g) are fitted.

Yellow silkscreen

When it comes to fighting fires, the first few seconds are the most important. The longer you wait to attack a fire, the more fire-fighting resources you need.

So it's crucial to have the right reflexes for the type of fire and the extinguisher to be used.

When should you use a dry powder extinguisher?

To find out more about fire types and how to extinguish a fire, consult our fire class summary table.

An ABC multi-purpose powder extinguisher can extinguish a Class A fire (wood, fabrics, paper, plastics, cardboard, etc.) by smothering action, and Class B fires (hydrocarbons, solvents, petrol, alcohols, greases, oils, paints, etc.) and Class C fires (butane, propane, acetylene, natural gas, manufactured gases) by inhibiting action.

A BC powder extinguisher will work on class B and C fires, while a D powder will be effective on class D fires. However, they are specific to the metal to be extinguished. It's important to seek specialist advice to choose the right product for the job.

Water extinguishers are effective on Class A, B and even F fires. However, additivated water is sensitive to sub-zero temperatures, even with antifreeze (down to -10°C), and is less versatile than powder. Powder extinguishers are therefore preferable for outdoor and industrial applications.

Powder extinguishers are preferable in the following environments:

automotive, shipping, trucks, industry.

For extreme environments, Eurofeu has developed an adapted range of devices: coastal areas, oil rigs, medical equipment, etc.
