Water-based fire extinguishers without PFAS (fluorine)

A new generation to meet tomorrow's environmental challenges.
REACH regulations A future without PFAS

In October 2025, the European Union published a ban on the use of fluorinated additives (PFAS) by December 31, 2030. Nicknamed "forever chemicals," these compounds are used in particular in AFFF (Aqueous Film-Forming Foam) fire extinguishers.

To support you through these regulatory and environmental changes, Eurofeu offers PFAS-free solutions tailored to your needs.

Go 100% fluorine-free without replacing your fire extinguishers

With the gradual ban on perfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), the production of AFFF additives ceased in 2024. This regulatory change will have a direct impact on the maintenance of water extinguishers currently in service.

To support this rapid transition to fluorine-free alternatives, simply replacing equipment with new devices alone cannot meet industrial and environmental challenges.

It is in this context that SYFEX (Syndicat Français des Extincteurs), of which Eurofeu is an active member, has taken action to propose a reliable technical solution. It is now possible, under certain conditions, to convert a certified fire extinguisher containing a fluorinated extinguishing agent into a certified PFAS-free model, using a specific conversion kit.

A first on the market

Eurofeu is the first company to offer a conversion kit for certain models in its range of fire extinguishers. This solution has been validated by a technical opinion from Apragaz, a laboratory accredited and recognized by Afnor.

, represents an alternative that is both economical and environmentally responsible.

FAQ

PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances) refer to a large family of more than 4,700 chemical compounds containing fluorine. Valued for their water-repellent, grease-repellent, and stain-resistant properties, they are widely used in our daily lives.

They are found in many everyday products: food packaging, cosmetics, waterproof textiles, household products, paints, and even fire extinguishing agents. Their exceptional durability makes them effective components... but also persistent in the environment, hence their nickname "forever chemicals."

In an AFFF water extinguisher, PFAS enable the creation and resistance of the floating film, its active ingredient.

This fire extinguisher uses water with an additive to improve its performance. The additive is now certified fluorine-free. Like fluorinated models, it can extinguish Class A (solid) and Class B (flammable liquid) fires while complying with future regulatory requirements.

Since the production of AFFF additives ceased in 2024, maintaining fire extinguishers containing these agents has become more complex due to the scarcity of additive doses. Faced with this regulatory change, companies and local authorities must adapt their fire extinguisher fleets.

There are now two solutions available: replacement with certified PFAS-free equipment, or conversion of existing appliances using specific kits. This solution has been validated by a technical opinion from Apragaz, a laboratory accredited and recognized by Afnor. Eurofeu supports its customers in this transition with concrete, reliable solutions that comply with the new standards.

This kit allows you to convert a fire extinguisher that was originally certified with a fluorinated agent into a PFAS-free certified model, while maintaining its safety level. This solution has been validated by a technical opinion from Apragaz, an accredited laboratory recognized by Afnor. By modifying certain spare parts and tracking the operation using a tracking label. This kit can only be used on identified Eurofeu devices.
