What is a fire blanket?

A fire blanket , also called a fire blanket or safety blanket, is a safety equipment designed to smother incipient fires by depriving them of oxygen, but also to protect people (to extinguish the fire on a person) and nearby property

When a fire breaks out, the fire blanket is deployed over the source of the fire, smothering the flames by blocking the supply of oxygen . This helps contain fires and prevent them from spreading.

It is usually made from fireproof materials such as fiberglass. It is presented in buildings in the form of a flexible envelope or a rigid box for wall installation, improving its visibility for the public. It is equipped with two handles for easy and quick handling and safe application on flames.

Fire blankets must comply with NF EN 1869 standards, revised in 2019 for greater safety.

Fire blankets are often used in restaurant kitchens, hotels, workshops where flammable products are stored, laboratories, and other environments where the risk of fire is high, but also in private homes, caravans, boats, etc.

Using a fire blanket

Fire blanket, how does it work?

Cuts off the oxygen supply

Physical barrier

Smothering the fire

When the product is deployed on a starting fire, it cuts off the oxygen supply. Without oxygen, the fire is deprived of its oxidant. This smothers the flames and stops combustion.

Physical barrier

In addition to smothering the fire, the blanket also acts as a physical barrier between the flames and surrounding materials, helping to prevent the fire from spreading.

Protection of people

Fire blankets can also be used to extinguish flames on a person who is on fire. By wrapping the person with the blanket, the flames are smothered and the person is protected from further burns. In this application, a fire blanket is less risky than a fire extinguisher because most fire extinguishers use corrosive additives that can injure a person.

How to use a fire blanket?

To use a fire blanket, follow these steps:

1.

Fire blankets have two black fireproof straps. To use them, you have to pull on these ties to release the blanket from its packaging. These straps are also used to handle them without risk of burns.

2.

Hold the blanket by the corners or handles, at face height to protect yourself from the flames, and approach the fire source.

3.

Spread the blanket out so that it completely covers the burning area, smothering it.

4.

Leave the blanket in place until the fire is completely out or until help arrives.

Please note that the fire blanket can only be used once . Once exposed to flames, it no longer provides protection.

Where to install a fire blanket?

A fire blanket should be placed in an easily accessible and strategic location. Ideally, it should be mounted on a wall bracket to keep it within reach in case of an emergency. The use of a fire blanket is recommended in several locations.

Workshops

Is it mandatory to have a fire blanket?

The installation of a fire blanket is not mandatory by law. However, their use is highly recommended in environments where fire risks are high, such as professional kitchens, laboratories, workshops, businesses, etc.

Local regulations or safety standards may sometimes require their presence in certain types of establishments.

Although not a legal requirement in all cases, having a fire blanket can be crucial for safety and can help prevent serious damage in the event of a fire. They are often considered basic safety equipment and their use is recommended to complement other fire prevention measures, such as fire extinguishers and smoke detectors.

Is fire cover mandatory for kitchen protection?

No, there is no obligation for this particular area. However, it is strongly recommended and can be very useful against a fryer fire and has the advantage of not altering the food.

Is a fire blanket effective in case of a car fire?

A fire blanket can be effective in the event of a car fire, especially if the fire is small and just starting. In an emergency, you can use the blanket to smother the flames or to protect people while waiting for help. However, it is important to remember that car fires can be extremely dangerous, and in some cases, it may be safer to stay away and call the fire department.

There are very large sizes of fire blankets, used specifically by firefighters to work on vehicles.

Lithium-Ion Battery Fire Blanket

There are also fire blankets specifically designed for lithium-ion battery fires. The temperature released by this type of fire makes conventional blankets fragile. The composition of these special models is therefore designed to absorb these high temperatures. Eurofeu markets a model coated with a mixture of silicone and vermiculite for maximum efficiency, as an extension of its Lith-Ex range of extinguishers.

Which fire blanket should I choose?

When choosing a fire blanket, make sure it meets safety and quality standards. Look for a blanket that is made from fireproof and heat-resistant materials. The size of the blanket is also important; it should be large enough to completely cover the burning area. Also, choose a blanket that is certified by the NF EN 1869 standard to ensure you have a quality product; moreover, the larger the size, the more versatile it will be.

Eurofeu offers you certified models made of fiberglass fabric coated with silicone on both sides, with two fireproof strips:

What does the NF EN 1869 standard provide?

Products that meet this standard are tested and guarantee the effectiveness of the product. Fire blanket models that do not have this stamp expose you to a risk. Coming into force in April 1997, the NF EN 1869 standard on fire blankets has recently evolved, with the aim of guaranteeing better quality of the products on the market.

The EN 1869:2019 version contains more stringent requirements for construction, general performance and fire performance. But also the addition of a new Class B fire test, as well as new marking requirements to help end users use these products that do not require training.
